VIDEO: Shakti with John McLauglin - CPB Documentary 1977 [DVD]

The Holy Grail of Shakti videos !!!

This 50 minute documentary, filmed by Canadian Public Broadcasting, is filled with spiritual wisdom and live performances as the band practices and performs during a tour in Europe.
One of the locations filmed during the day is a concert in a bullfighting ring in the Provence section of France. McLaughlin's playing is *incredible*.

A couple of technical notes: There are a few, very small dropouts that were present during the transfer. One of them occured right at the end of the credits, so the transfer was ended just before the video dropped. Right afterwards, it stated C 1977 Canadian Public Broadcasting.

VIDEO: Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucia - "A Special Guitar Summer Night" [2DVD]

This show has been in minor circulation for quite some time. The version which circulates the most is on 1 DVD, originally from a VCD > DVD transfer. This is the best version of this show I've come across so far. It's pretty much an upgrade to all other sources out there. Superb quality from a master tape.

VIDEO: Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin & Paco De Lucia - "Friday Night in San Francisco" [2DVD]

I wasn't sure I could seed this show without cutting out 4 tracks that are on the official release LP and CD. But the officially released tracks are slightly different from this video. They are not exactly the same. The studio release was "doctored up." For a long time, I've been trying to find a better quality version of this show, but after speaking to a couple others who have this show, they all seem to be from the same source. This video is fairly dark but has good audio quality. It is VERY watchable. If I had a time machine, this would be one of my first stops (I would really only use time travel to see shows). I've always had hope that one day, this video will be commerically released. One of the greatest performances by anyone, anywhere, anytime !!!

VIDEO: Remember Shakti - Live at Forum, Leverkusener Jazztage, Leverkusen, Germany, October 15, 2000 [DVD]

Remember Shakti is a quintet which combines elements of traditional Indian music with elements of jazz. The band consists of English guitarist John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain (tabla), U. Srinivas (mandolin), Shankar Mahadevan (vocals), and V. Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam), who are all of Indian descent. The band's name is derived from John Mclaughlin's acoustic Indian fusion band Shakti which was active in the 1970s. This band consisted of John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, L. Shankar, T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram, and R. Raghavan. The word "Shakti" translates in Sanskrit to "Female Creative Power" or "Goddess."

Mahavishnu Orchestra - Live at Boston Music Hall, Boston, Mass, U.S.A., October 19, 1973 [MASTER][FLAC]

This is a killer fusion show !! We're not sure which, but this is either an early or late show, close to complete, mastered (unfortunately) on C-60s so a few cuts. I think this one is the late show. I saw Maha. 3x in 72, 3 more in 73 all in Boston, but never a late show, and worst of all, deckless for all! But this is from my friend's master recording, fairly clean recording, a fine show. Enjoy !!!

This does not sound quite as good as the show from Oxford Ale House but it's not too bad. Still one of my VERY favorite jazz-rock fusion shows.

Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White - Live at Le Grand Rex, Paris, France, October 20, 2009 [Audio + Bonus Video] [FLAC]

LDB Master Series #210

The nice thing about this show is how flexible these musicians are. I saw them plus Al DiMeola 15 months earlier playing the hardest fusion music and now here they are to perform soft jazz in a trio outfit. A few funny accidents during the reconding of this show: 1) the line to enter the balcony was too long and the people supposed to assign your set too slow. Result: when I was still queueing to the balcony the concert started, so the first few minutes the sound is a bit worse. 2) I had to change the batteries so i waited untill the end of a track to do it. While trying to put new batteries into the R-09 the memory card got removed and fell in the dark! Luckily Chick called for a 15 minutes interval so I did not lose any music while searching for the card!

The show was too short and only one encore was played, Also Chick who usually is very talkative to the audience did not say a word. Overall the music was ok but not as good as I expected...maybe it's just me.

I try a new experiment for the new masters, including one video footage from the show done with my camera. I always do it to keep a visual souvenir of the show but for the first time I share it with you. Don't expect anything professional but maybe you will like to see how the show looked like.

Regardless, enjoy!

Volker Kriegel & Seifert - Live in Hamburg, Germany, January 26, 1973 [FM][FLAC]

Volker Kriegel:

German jazz-rock guitarist, often known as the Father of Jazz Rock, born 24-Dec-1943, Darmstadt, Germany. Died: 15-Jun-2003, Spain. Kriegel taught himself guitar at the age of 15 and started his own trio when he was 18, winning awards at the 1963 German Amateur Jazz festival. While studying at Frankfurt University he met Emil and Albert Mangelsdorff and continued to develop his jazz interests. When American expatriate vibes-player Dave Pike offered him a place in his new band, he decided to give up his studies to become a full-time musician. He stayed with the Dave Pike Set from 1968-73, until Dave Pike returned to the USA, at which point Kriegel and Eberhard Weber founded Spectrum. When Weber left in 1976 Kriegel started the jazz-rock group, the Mild Maniac Orchestra. In the meantime, in 1975, he had been a co-founder of the United Jazz And Rock Ensemble. In 1977 he co-founded Mood Records. As well as his musical activities, he was a distinguished cartoonist (both for journals and record sleeves), animator and broadcaster. Kriegel died from a heart attack in June 2003.

Vital Information (feat. Frank Gambale) - Live at 8x10 Club, Baltimore, MD, January 29, 2003 [2CD][FLAC]

This is nice quality, but the audience is a bit chatty at times, especially one particular female during 2nd set, who is apparently in love with Steve Smith - still I'd give it an "A-" overall. The performace itself is smoking - 2 full sets, 2 1/2+ hours of music - what more needs to be said?

Return to Forever - Live in Hamburg, Germany, September 15, 1972 [FM][REMASTER][2CD][FLAC]

FM Broadcast

Lineage: FM -> cassette (?) -> SHN -> Boneroller (many thanks!) -> Sound Forge -> FLAC

Remastered 7/2004 by TheTooleMan

Remaster notes: the copy of the recording I received ran fast - almost a semitone above the original pitch. Man, those guys were playing their fingers off! It also had hum, FM static and tape hiss, which I reduced as much as possible, and also lowered the muddy bass. At about 7:05 in CD 2, track 4, La Fiesta, the recording switches to mono - probably a patch from a different source. I matched the quality of the rest of the recording to make this transition as smooth as possible. Fortunately, the stereo recording resumes with track 5, Spain. Considering the rarity of material by Return to Forever from this period, the age of the tape, and the overall high quality of the sound, this will provide many of hours of good listening.

TheTooleMan

Return to Forever:

Chick Corea - keyboards
Airto Moreira - drums
Joe Farrell - flute and soprano saxophone
Stanley Clarke - bass
