Guitar Trio - John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, & Paco De Lucia (Guest: Steve Morse) - Live at Kiva Auditorium, Albuquerque, NM, USA, 24 Oct 1983 [FLAC][MASTER]

The Guitar Trio
John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, & Paco De Lucia
(guest Steve Morse)
Live at Kiva Auditorium
Albuquerque, NM, USA
24 Oct 1983

From 1st Generation Cassettes

Original Recording Gear: AIWA Stereo Walkman w/AIWA Stereo Microphone Master Cassettes copied from Nakamichi BX-125 (or BX-150) to Nakamichi CR-1A onto TDK-SA tapes 1st Gen cassettes copied and tracked using Nak CR-1A (azimuth adjusted) to HHB 830 Stanadalone.

The Kiva Auditorium is part of the Albuquerque Convention Center, and it was created to showcase chamber music, Broadway touring companies, ballet, and other intimate shows. It seats about 3000, with plush theater seating and a permanent stage. Sound is usually way above average, and it's probably the best sound in town. Rock shows are not allowed. A promoter almost got Stevie Ray vaughan in there by booking him as a blues concert, but someone in management heard a couple of tracks from "Texas Flood", and the show had to be re-located. During the 10 years I lived in Albuquerque, some of the shows I saw there were Tangerine Dream, John McLaughlin (Acoustic show on the Belo Horizonte tour), and a show featuring Stephen Stills, America, and To Chapin. In the  1990's, Jethro Tull, CSN, and ELP have played there, but that's about as heavy as the management will allow.

Sound quality on this recording is very good. The music sounds great, but like many audience recordings,  the stage banter is a little harder to make out. The crowd really shows their appreciation, but there's not a lot of talking outside of that. enjoy! (the taper/uploader)

Musicians:

Al Di Meola - acoustic guitar
Paco De Lucia - acoustic guitar
John McLaughlin - acoustic guitar

Guest: Steve Morse (on the last track)

CAB (Tony MacAlpine, Bunny Brunel, Virgil Donati) - Musicians Institute, Hollywood, CA, USA, 2003

The Richie Hallebeek and Antti Kotikoski Band - Live in Helsinki, Finland, November 23, 2000 [FLAC]

Grabbed this from my "Obscure" stack, but any jazz-fusion guitar lovers should dig this show.  While the compositions are derivative of Holdsworth and the guitar players (Hallebeek from Holland and Kotikoski from Finland) could at times be mistaken for Allan Holdsworth, Gambale, Shawn Lane or Scott Henderson, they do have their own unique voice.  Despite the obscurity, this is well worth the download - especially if  you like "how did he do that?"-style fretboard pyrotechnics.  Not that this is a total shredfest. Many of the tunes are tightly structured and the playing very tasteful.

For more info on these gunslingers, check out the great website www.richiehallebeek.com where you'll find a ton of great interviews with other name guitarists by Hallebeek.  Also visit http://www.kotikoski.com for upcoming gigs in the Los Angeles area (Antti teaches at MIT/GIT). If you like this show and want more, be sure to hunt down the long OOP Richie & Antti CD "Generator" (on Mike Varney's now defunct Legato label) or the more recent Richie Hallebeek Project CD, which also features Brett Garsed and the late Shawn Lane on a couple of cuts. Enjoy! ~barkndog

total length :  33 minutes

chapter 1

Film of the Mahavishnu Orchestra from a columbia records unreleased promo for an unknown single release .you see the cover at the end of the clip.... anyone ever seen it ?  it had very badly synced audio with audience cheering covering the mismatch it would appear in putting together the promo the video editor columbia used got confused with the sound mix  of the groups electric guitar,  moog syntheiser, electric violin sounds and got lost
trying to match them to the video for the promo to a different song -Noonward Race- and then some parts were speeded up, the film is of the band playing at Hunter College in New York May 15, 1972  which was broadcast by radio station wabi 99.5 FM.  The project must have then got shelved but a copy with this timecode was shown on  possibly a pilot episode of an unknown tv show.

The video was recently placed in the video-editing timeline along with the audio from Hunter College FM broadcast and moved around untill a good match was found during this part of " Dance of Maya "

note: it is possible the film columbia used is from grabs taken from several different songs from the concert and it is only a coincidence it best fits this part of "Dance of Maya"

chapter 2 - 5

For the first time decent video of the "in-concert" TV show has been synced to an FM recording of the simulcast -bpthree-
from a VHS tape the "in concert " TV show filmed at  Bananafish Garden in Brooklyn New York the most likely date is believed to be  March 15 1973 This copy is about 2nd or 3rd generation off the taper who apparently still has his Betamax tape somewhere but in storage. It was first synced to the audio off the Japanese bootleg " Mourning of the Eternal Five"  and then sent to a McLaughlin
collector for an opinion the collector had since heard of a better recording by "merday" then when that was synced another slightly better recording of the simulcast uploaded first on TTD then Dime of " bpthree "  which is a little better and so this was synced and although not perfect is quite acceptable and now for first time the video has stereo audio.

chapter  6 - 7

Filmed for D.K.R.C at the Palace Theatre in New York on November 7, 1973  video sourced from 2 VHS tapes -one was slightly longer- only B quality  but better than what most people have,  the first 30 seconds is B- then the quality improves but alas to only B quality,
there is supposed to an even better quality copy of the video around  but I don't have it the good thing it has now been synced to a nice soundboard audio from the show

Trivia - The photo used for the menu was taken at the Bananafish Garden concert by the photographer   Annie Leibovitz

Allan Holdsworth - Live at Country Club, Reseda, LA, California, USA, May 11th, 1982 [SBD]

Master soundboard cassette. Was thought to be recorded on a Nakamichi Dragon. First generation cassette recording and the digital transfer performed on unknown equipment. Flac files exchanged on a flash drive. Recieved from the person who put the cassette in the deck and hit record that night :)
Saves one generation from the R2R copy I made back then. Clean up includes phase and balance corrections. The noise floor would come up noticeably during the quiet passages and between songs.
An inverting noise filter was used on these areas and also on the real quiet piano solo. A tradeoff between unprocessed and listenable. For historical reference only and not intended for resale or any commercial use. Enjoy! -M-

Allan Holdsworth - Tralfamadore Cafe (now "The Tralf"), Buffalo NY, USA, April 11, 1986 [SBD]

http://twitter.com/fusionfreddy

Fantastic Allan Holdsworth recording in Soundboard quality. Another of my "shoebox" series, maybe an upgrade over previous shares, your mileage may vary. This is a straight transfer of my XLII tape (1991 vintage cassette with the big Maxell clear window). Seems very close to correct pitch, and a nice mix which is true on all of the tapes I've heard from this show. I like this source, but I'm biased probably, one I've had a very long time and know well. I also have a known lineage 3rd gen on XLII-S that really doesn't sound a nice as this one does. As on all copies I've ever heard, this tapes cuts in rather roughly during Non Brewed Condiment, cuts and fades during Pud Wud, and resumes during Devil Take The Hindmost, probably due to a tape flip that wasn't caught in time at the mixing desk. I'm working on getting two of my decks repaired, a NAD 6340 and a Teac A-420, so I may revisit this again sometime. Nothing wrong with my Technics RS-BR465 except high miles. I gave it a good cleaning recently before I started sharing some tapes again here recently. Enjoy! ~blackpage

Devadip Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu John McLaughlin - Live at Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, CA, USA, 1973-09-05 [2CD][FM]

Reconstructed by TheTooleMan, May 2007

Lineage: FM -> FLAC -> Sound Forge -> FLAC

Two recordings showed up in the past which generated a lot of discussion and some suggestions for a reconstruction project. The recordings were supposedly the early and late performances of Santana (the band) and John McLaughlin in Berkeley, CA, on September 5, 1973, but some of the files from the early show were later discovered to be from the Chicago show of a few nights earlier. I couldn’t resist the challenge, though in hindsight I underestimated its size. The results aren’t perfect, but they are as good as I can make them given my time and budget constraints. The performance is fantastic, and certainly worth the effort. The recordings presented more than a few obstacles. All of them had problems with EQ, tape hiss, FM noise and compression, cuts due to recording tape running out while the broadcast continued, and random adjustments to levels on one or both channels. The tracks from the “late show” recording were numbered in the wrong order. In the original recording, at about 30 minutes into track three, “A Love Supreme,” the recording cuts off, then resumes with some tape swishing. This is probably the result of changing a tape and resuming recording while the performance continued. I cut out the damaged part of the recording and cross-faded the two parts to make a seamless edit, but some difference in audio quality between the two tapes can still be heard. The quality of the recording on this tape improves gradually, but track four, “I’m Aware of You” ends prematurely. I faded out just before the abrupt cut on the original tape. The recording of “Flame-Sky” cuts off abruptly, so it was also faded out. Level changes occur randomly throughout the original recording, as if someone decided to adjust the levels on one or both channels of the tape recorder from time to time. These and other “false crescendos” created by FM dynamics processing were ironed out in the mastering process, though some may remain. After listening to the Berkeley recordings, I believe that one person recorded all of the tracks from an FM broadcast. All of the tracks have the same FM hiss and dynamic compression, which draws up solo sections of performances to the volume of the full band and causes some “pumping” on percussion sounds. Since it is not too likely that both performances were broadcast on one night, there’s a good chance that all of these recordings are of the same show. All of the tracks in this reconstruction required pitch correction of -65 cents, another bit of evidence that the recording originated from the same person and broadcast. My thanks to everyone who seeded the two recordings, and to everyone who contributed to figuring out exactly what we had there. Listening back to the completed reconstruction, I find this to be an engrossing, ear-pleasing reconstruction of most of the fantastic Berkeley performance of this incredible band. Hopefully you’ll agree!
